Summer is winding down, but school deals and events are just beginning! Any parent of a school-aged child knows that August makes for a busy shopping month: There are school supplies and books to buy, backpacks, binders and clothes that all command us to open our wallet.

But you don’t have to let back-to-school shopping blow your budget. From essentials to family friendly events, we’ve handpicked some sales, deals and events that you should consider before the new school year begins.

Virginia Tax Free Weekend – Legislation enacted by the 2015 General Assembly combines Virginia’s three existing sales tax holidays into one three-day holiday beginning the first Friday in August at 12:01 a.m. and ending the following Sunday at 11:59 p.m. This year’s sales tax holiday is August 7-9. That means that during the sales tax holiday period, consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star and WaterSense products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone.

Kids Eat Free At Shoney’s – Starting August 3, Shoney’s is celebrating back to school with FREE kids’ meals every weekday in August! Join them at participating Shoney’s restaurants Monday through Friday until August 31 for a FREE kids’ meal – available all day! Just bring the coupon and order any regularly-priced adult entree or buffet.

Staples –  Staples promises to get students 110 percent ready for the start of school. Now through Sept. 19, Staples will match competitor’s prices, and then offer an additional 10 percent off the price difference and if your a rewards member you can get up to 5% back in Staples Rewards on every purchase! Present proof of the competitor’s price in store. For online purchases, call 800-333-3330 and provide the url and item number for the lower-priced product you found.

Target –  Got a college kiddo?  Target’s back to college deal is offering up to 20 percent off select college items , like bedding, furniture, bath and decor. Plus, use the code COLLEGE online to save $10 off a purchase of $50 or $25 off a purchase of $100 in college bed and bath. They also have sales on regular school supplies.

Walgreens – Enjoy Deal of the Week from now until school starts for markdowns on select items. Papermate ballpoint pens is 29 cents and Crayola markers or colored pencils are 99 cents through Aug. 8.

Back To School Events

Prince George County – This fair is designed to assist families with school supplies for school aged children. The Back to School Fair will be a family fun afternoon full of children’s activities, food, and entertainment open to all school aged children in Prince George County.

Petersburg – Kickback2School offers FREE Haircuts, ponytails, painted nails, stuffed book bags, music, games and more!
Donations (money and supplies) and volunteers are needed for the September 6 event taking place at- Petersburg‬ High School. 

Colonial Heights (August 18th-Residents Only)  School Supplies, Raffles, Face painting, Inflatables, Pony Rides & Carnival Games and Free Back-to-School T-shirts to the first 100 students to attend!
