Memorial Day 2015 Events & Freebies

Memorial Day is that time of year where we honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to our country. It is a time for parades, memorial celebrations but also the time where a number of restaurants, stores and museums offer freebies and discounts on Memorial Day weekend.

Some of the discounts are for active military members and veterans. Others include immediate family or retirees.  We’ve compiled a list below. As always , we suggest you check with your local store before heading out to make sure it is participating.

Blandford Cemetery (Petersburg) 17th Annual Memorial Day Service at Blandford Cemetery presented by Dearing-Beauregard Camp #1813 Sons of Confederate Veterans. Please assemble at Memorial Hill, Monday, May 25 starting at 3:00 pm. Everyone is invited.

CityPoint (Hopewell) – Join VFW Post 637 in honoring our Nation’s Veterans at City Point National Cemetery on Memorial Day.  All-American Post Commander Arendsen is proud to welcome our keynote speaker LTC Renee L. Mann, BN Commander, 262nd QM BN. Event starts at 1100 HRS.

Colonial Heights – The Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and will last approximately 45 minutes. Presented by VFW #2239.

Colonial Williamsburg – Active duty military, reservists, retirees, veterans, and their dependents receive free Colonial Williamsburg admission tickets during Memorial Day weekend—May 22–25, 2015. Explore the Revolutionary City, hear the stirring cadences of the Fifes and Drums, join in the patriotic events, and browse the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.

Blue Star Museums   Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day, May 25, 2015 through Labor Day, September 7, 2015. See museums in your area that qualify

Kings Dominion – Join us May 23-25 and July 4-5 as we pay tribute to our brave military service men and women by offering FREE park admission to any active, inactive or retired United States Service men and women with a valid military I.D. Enjoy activities planned each day along International Street including gettign your picture taken with our Uncle Sam stiltwalker at the front gate, real Army vehicles on display under the Eiffel Tower, a postcard mailing station to send to the troops, sponsored by NBC12, and an appearance by the USO! Also rock out to some awesome live music by our service men and women.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens – On Monday, May 25 (only) the Garden will offer FREE admission for military personnel and/or their dependents, with valid military ID card. Anyone else in the party (non-dependents) can receive half-price admission.

Sandston Memorial Day Parade – The American Legion Posts 242 and 144 are hosting the 7th Annual Sandston Memorial Day Parade on Williamsburg Road. This year’s parade theme is Honoring Korean War Veterans. Prior to the parade, a memorial service will be held at Seven Pines National Cemetery at noon. These events are to acknowledge and honor our veterans, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Information:  http://www.ehba.us/parade or mur12@henrico.us.

Shoney’s – Shoney’s is offering a FREE all-american burger to active-duty and military veterans on Memorial Dan. Proof of military service is required. Dine-in only. Offer valid at participating restaurants only.

Virginia War Memorial Celebration:  Honoring all veterans and their families who remain vigilant to protect families everywhere. Governor Terry McAuliffe has been invited to be the Guest Speaker. Open to the public. FREE. Co-hosted with the 11th District American Legion. Thomas Jefferson High School Corps of Cadets Alumni Band will play patriotic music in the Shrine of Memory at 2:00 pm.
